The U.S.S. DENVER (CL58) commanded by A. M. BLEDSOE, Captain, U. S. Navy, is assigned to Cruiser Division 12, which consists of the MONTPELIER (F), COLUMBIA, CLEVELAND, and DENVER. Cruiser Division 12 is a part of Task Force 39 (Rear Admiral R. W. HAYLER, U. S. Navy, in MONTPELIER, commanding) in the Third Fleet of the United States Pacific Fleet. Zone Description: +7.

Moored starboard side to Pier No. 1, San Diego, California. Moored starboard side to Pier No. 1, San Diego, California, in seven fathoms of water with the following lines in use: one wire bow and stern line, forward and after bow springs and forward and after quarter springs. Receiving fresh water and telephone services from dock. Boiler No. 1 is in use for auxiliary purposes. Ships present: U.S.S. At 1151 joined Task Group 19.7, Captain J. M. SHOEMAKER, U. S. Navy, in U.S.S. FRANKLIN (CV13), Task Group Commander and O.T.C., and formed cruising formation 4-LS with the U.S.S. FRANKLIN as guide and the U.S.S. CUSHING, RICHARD P. Steaming in company with U.S.S. FRANKLIN (guide), U.S.S. TWIGGS, CUSHING, R.P. LEARY, comprising Task Group 19.7. Captain J. M. Shoemaker, USN, in the U.S.S. FRANKLIN is OTC. Base course is 269o T (PGC), 252o T (PSC), speed is 18 knots (180 RPM) with 15 knots (150 RPM) as standard speed. Task Group is in Cruising Formation 4LS, with the U.S.S. DENVER 1000 yards from the U.S.S. FRANKLIN and bearing 170o relative. The U.S.S. LEARY, CUSHING and TWIGGS form an anti-submarine screen forward. The ship is darkened and Material Condition "B" is set. Operating in Condition of Readiness III. Boilers No. 1 and 3 are in use and both SG Radars and SK Radars are manned. The No. 1 steering unit is being used with the starboard cable.

Shoemaker, in U.S.S. FRANKLIN is OTC. Standard speed is 15 knots (150 RPM). Task Force is Cruising in disposition 4LS and using zig-zag plan No. 6. Station of this ship in formation is 1170. Task Group 58.1 is composed of the HORNET, YORKTOWN, BATTAN, OAKLAND, CruDiv 13 less BIRMINGHAM plus DENVER, DesRon 46, and DesDiv 11. Task Force 58 is a part of the Fifth Fleet commanded by Admiral R. A. SPRUANCE, U. S. Navy. Task Group 58.1 is under orders to proceed to the vicinity of the Bonin and Volcano Islands and attack Japanese aircraft, shipping, and installations at Haha Jima, Iwo Jima, and Chichi Jima on the 4th of July. Ammunition expended: 3776 rounds of H.E. Tracer 40mm; 880 rounds of 20mm H.E. Tracer; 1601 rounds of 20mm H.E. Incendiary.
