ALGERINE Class

convoy escort

This class was designed as an improvement on the BANGOR class minesweepers. Built with more sheer at the bows, these ships performed better in heavy seas. Intended from the beginning as convoy escorts, they never had minesweeping gear added in the RCN. The RN used this class extensively as minesweepers; in the RN they were mostly powered by steam turbines instead of the reciprocating engines used in the RCN.

HMCS ST. BONIFACE at sea. She is fitted out as a convoy escort, with depth charges on the rails right aft, and a depth charge thrower at the forward end of the quarterdeck. The shared lineage with the BANGOR class minesweepers is plainly apparent. DND Photo, Courtesy of Don Thompson.
