The first Caprice (No. 703), a motor boat free leased to the Navy, was commissioned on 24 August 1917, Ensign C. H. Burnett, USNRF, in command. Assigned to the 5th Naval District she performed inshore patrol duty in that area during World War I. She was placed out of commission on 24 January 1919 and returned to her owner.
