Amethyst

Amethyst is a violet quartz crystal.

Amethyst (PYc-3) was built in 1931 as Samona II by Craig Shipbuilding Co., Long Beach, Calif. ; acquired by the Navy 4 September 1940 through the Maritime Commission ; and commissioned 27 February 1941, Lieutenant H. Reich, USNR, in command.

Amethyst served with the Inshore Patrol at San Pedro, Calif., and Surface Task Group, Southern Section, San Pedro, on patrol off southern California until inactivated in January 1944. Decommissioned 2 February 1944, she was recommissioned 19 April 1944 with a Coast Guard crew. Until late 1945 she operated out of San Francisco on patrol, plane guard, or weather duty. Amethyst was decommissioned for the second time 27 February 1946 and transferred to the Maritime Commission 11 September
