AVP-43 was named for a bay off the coast of New York, APA-241 for a county in Arkansas.

Hempstead (APA-241) was to be built by Oregon Shipbuilding Corp., Portland, Oreg., under Maritime Commission contract. The contract was cancelled 27 August 1947 [Vol. IV, errata: 14 August 1945].
