Notes:

The Type 22 frigates were built in three batches, the latter two batches improved on the previous one. Intended to replace LEANDER class frigates, the early Type 22 ships were primarily designed for the antisubmarine role. In fact, the hull design was borrowed from the Type 12 and LEANDER classes, except scaled up by about 12%. The first two batches were the first, and so far only, British warhips to delete a main gun from the design, and instead settled for Seawolf launchers fore and aft, and four Exocet SSM single launchers forward. The first two ships were built with an alternate funnel design and without torpedo tubes, but the streamlined funnel of the later ships and STWS were retrofitted to BROADSWORD and BATTLEAXE after they entered service.

The Batch 2 ships were designed longer and deeper than the Batch 1 ships, and had a new clipper bow for better seakeeping. The last four Batch 2 members were designed to carry either 2 Lynx helicopters or a single Sea King or EH 101 helicopter.

The Batch 3 ships were further lengthened, and incorporated for the first time a 4.5" gun forward in place of the Exocet launchers on the earlier batches. Although retaining the two Seawolf launchers, Exocet was replaced with 8 Harpoon launchers. These ships also include command facilities.

As of 2005, all Batch 1 and 2 ships have been paid off and most have been sold or scrapped. Only the four Batch 3 ships remain in active service.

BATTLEAXE
Notes:
1. Note the rather straight bow compared to the later BEAVER, shown below. BATTLEAXE also has the original funnel design in this photo. Both Seawolf launchers can be seen, ahead of the bridge and above the hangar. The Exocet launchers are all located on the foc'st'le just ahead of the forward Seawolf launcher. The aft fire control director is located between the aft mast and the aft Seawolf launcher. M.D. Thomas Photo.
2. M.D. Thomas Photo.
3. Taken from forward of the Exocet launchers looking aft, one of the clamshell doors can be seen opened on the forward Seawolf launcher. M.D. Thomas Photo.
4. The view from the bridge looking forward. M.D. Thomas Photo.
5. The bridge interior. M.D. Thomas Photo.
6. The forward mast, with the Type 967/968 radar at the top. A 40mm/60 single gun mount is located on the starboard side at the foot of the mast, and the old 8-barrelled Corvus decoy launcher is located to the right of the photo on the same deck. M.D. Thomas Photo.
7. A Lynx helicopter is pictured in the hangar, with a torpedo strapped on and an air-dropped depth charge on the deck nearby.  M.D. Thomas Photo.
8. The Corvus decoy launcher. M.D. Thomas Photo.
9. The old 40mm/60 single gun. This was later replaced with a 30mm mount. M.D. Thomas Photo.
10. Back view of the forward Seawolf launcher. M.D. Thomas Photo.
11. The forward Type 910 fire control director. M.D. Thomas Photo.

Batch 2
BEAVER
Notes:
1. A broadside view, showing the new clipper bow fitted to the Batch 2 ships. Other differences include the new streamlined funnel, and the extra distance between the forward mast and fire control director, the latter the result of the stretched length of the Batch 2 ships. M.D. Thomas Photo.
