SALISBURY Class (Type 61)

aircraft direction frigate

A follow-on to the LEOPARD class (Type 41) frigate, the Type 61 retained the same hull but incorporated improvements realized during the building of the Type 41s. The Type 41s lost the aft 4.5" gun of the Type 41, but received a more extensive air warning radar suite for the aircraft direction mission. It had become apparent that guns were not sufficient for anti-aircraft defence, and that carrier-bourne aircraft and the ability to control them was more effective. Both classes shared the basic hull design with the earlier Type 12 frigates, but with a shorter raised foc'st'le. In addition, the steam propulsion was replaced by a diesel powerplant. Soon obsolete, construction of further ships of this class ended at four as production switched to the newer LEANDER class. One of the ships was transferred to Bangladesh in the late 1970s, and remained in service there until 1996.

The after foc'st'le on SALISBURY, along with the forward end of the superstructure. The 4.5" gun is to the right, with the Type 12 style bridge in the middle of the photo. The fire control director (with two Type 275 trackers mounted) is above and just aft of the bridge, with the Type 277 radar mounted on the short lattice mast ahead of the forward plated mast. The Type 993 radar dish can be seen at the top of the plated mast, looking rather like an oddly cut wedge of cheese. The three shiny metal caps of the chaff launcher can be seen to the left, at bridge level.   M.D. Thomas photo.
