CAVENDISH (CA) Class

destroyer

Built near the end of the Second World War, these ships were soon obsolete, and starting in 1953 they were modernized. By 1961, all had been fitted with remote power control (RPC) on the 4.5" guns, 2 Squid ASW mortars, and a new Bofors Mk.5 40mm twin mount. Several members of the class received a new enclosed bridge similar to that found on the Type 12 frigates, while the other retained open bridges. Two members of the class were fitted with Seacat anti-aircraft missiles. Originally built as four different flotillas, with CA, CO, CH, and CR groupings, many ships of the other flotillas ended up in foreign navies.
