Steaming in company with COLUMBIA, HUDSON, FULLAM (32.12) O.T.C. Rear Admiral R. W. HAYLER, USN in DENVER, southwest of Guadalcanal conducting a shore bombardment rehearsal. Steaming in company with Task Group 32.12, consisting of U.S.S. DENVER, COLUMBIA, HUDSON, FULLAM, on base course 060oT(PGC), zig-zagging in accordance with plan No. 6, speed 15 knots (150 RPM), in Cruising Formation 6S; Rear Admiral R. W. Hayler, USN, in U.S.S. Ceased firing at 0830 and troops commenced landing on beaches. 0830 Observed troop landings on Guadalcanal in invasion rehearsal. 0905 Sounded flight quarters and made preparations to recover aircraft. 0910 Hoisted aboard plane No. 7. 0916 Hoisted aboard plane No. 8. 0925 Set Condition of Readiness II in the Gunnery Department and Condition III throughout the remainder of the ship. Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples. Conditions normal. 1136 Set Condition of Readiness III throughout the ship.

Ships draft forward 22’10", aft 24’ 9". 1707 Commenced fueling. At 1735 Rear Admiral R. W. HAYLER returned to the ship. 1735 Commenced receiving aviation gasoline. Rear Admiral R. W. Hayler, USN, returned aboard from the U.S.S. LEUTZE. 1755 Hoisted plane No. 7 aboard. 1759 Hoisted plane No. 8 aboard. 1805 Completed fueling, having received 181,812 gallons fuel. 1820 Completed receiving aviation gasoline, having received 2,750 gallons. Ship’s draft forward 23’ 8", aft 25’ 6". At 1824 underway, entered Port Purvis and anchored in Berth 27 at 1909. 1824 Underway from alongside U.S.S. ESCAMBIA, proceeding on various courses and speeds to proceed to anchorage in Port Purvis. Captain at the Conn, Executive Officer and Navigator on the bridge. 1835 Passed through harbor entrance nets. 1909 Anchored in berth No. 27, Port Purvis, Florida Island, Solomon Islands, in 18 fathoms of water with 60 fathoms of chain to the starboard anchor. Anchorage bearings: Signal Tower 245.5oT, Beacon "I" 022.1oT, Beacon "D" 228.5oT. Secured main engines and steering engines. 1930 Secured No. 2 boiler. No. 4 boiler on line for auxiliary purposes. Anchored in Berth 27, Port Purvis. Anchored in Berth No. 27, Port Purvis, Florida Island, Solomon Islands Group, in 18 fathoms of water with 60 fathoms of chain to the starboard anchor. The ship is darkened, except for necessary lights, Material Condition "B" and modified Condition of Readiness III set throughout the ship. Boiler No. 4 is in use for auxiliary purposes. Ships present include U.S.S. LOUISVILLE (SOPA) and various units of the Pacific Fleet, auxiliary and patrol craft.
