CLEVELAND commenced fueling. 0940 U.S.S. commenced fueling. 1030 Launched plane No. 8 to port, pilot Ens. Haseltine, USNR, passenger FRITZ, F., ARM3c, USN. 1036 U.S.S. PRINGLE completed fueling. 1045 U.S.S. PHILIP commenced fueling. 1045 As plane No. 7 was making its approach to land the depth charge became disengaged and detonated, the explosion following is thought to have damaged one of the plane's floats which upon landing, capsized. 1050 Made daily inspection of all smokeless powder and all magazines. Conditions normal. 1105 U.S.S. CONWAY recovered pilot and passenger of plane, neither of whom were injured. The plane was then destroyed completely by sinking by gun fire. 1132 U.S.S. CLEVELAND completed fueling. 1138 U.S.S. PHILIP completed fueling. 1142 First line was made fast to tanker for fueling this ship. 1150 First fuel hose across and secured on board. Av. Steam 600 lbs. ADDITIONAL REMARKS BY THE COMMANDING OFFICER.

In accordance with directive of the Commander Third Fleet and ComTaskGroup 36.2 at 1534 the DENVER, CLEVELAND, SAUFLEY and RENSHAW departed from ComTaskGroup 36.2 and proceeded toward a rendezvous in order to join the U.S.S. NORTH CAROLINA Unit, and then to operate after rendezvous in the northern half of Area "G".

ADDITIONAL REMARKS BY THE COMMANDING OFFICER.

 In accordance with Commander Third Fleet's instructions, at 1528 DENVER with CLEVELAND, SAUFLEY and RENSHAW left the NORTH CAROLINA Unit in order to join with Task Group 36.2. At 1540, joined ComTaskGroup 36.2 (Cruiser Division TWELVE, Destroyer Division 43 and U.S.S. PRINGLE) and took departure for an area 30 miles to the west of Rendova with expectations of intercepting a Japanese Task Unit. Commander Task Group 36.2 informed Commander Third Fleet that it was impossible to arrive at Rendova area until early in the morning of 6 July 1943. At 2200 Task Group 36.2 changed its destination to proceed toward Guadalcanal in order to refuel at Koki Point.
