JANUARY 1, 1945

TO

JANUARY 31, 1945

Monday, 1 January, 1945

Enroute to LEYTE, GULF, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS, as part of special task group, DENVER, MONTPELIER, CLAXTON, SMITH, Rear Admiral R. S. RIGGS, USN, Commander Cruiser Division TWELVE, U.S.S. DENVER, Flagship.

00 – 04 Watch

Ploughing steadily through the Western sea,

Enroute to San Pedro Bay in old Leyte.

As special task unit, DENVER plus three,*

All keeping station on the dauntless "D".

Rear Admiral Riggs is OTC

In the DENVER, known also as the mighty "D".

Zigging and zagging in the bright moonlight,

Plan 25 we are following all this night.

Our course 296, our speed 18,

Gyrating on toward the Philippines.

Far below with muted roar,

Driving mightily boilers 2 and 4.

Readiness III and "B" throughout,

To keep us from harm, within and without.

Piercing the night, still as a church,

DENVER’s radar has air-surface search.

Throughout topside the ship is darkened,

To prevent the enemy from being hearkened.

Over a sea that is soft and caressing,

Secure in the knowledge that we’re always progressing,

We steam on into a bright new year,

Alert and confident, undimmed with fear.

*U.S.S. MONTPELIER, CLAXTON and SMITH.

SPECIAL COMMENTS AND INFORMATION

    1. Communications
    2. were excellent as far as could be observed from this ship.

    7. Enemy Air Operations
    8. are described in enclosures. The suicide dive bomber remains a serious threat. Nothing new in the way of offense or defense developed in this operation.

PERSONNEL PERFORMANCE AND CASUALTIES

    1. No personnel casualties were incurred during this period of this report. All personnel performance was of a high order.

LESSONS LEARNED, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

    1. Mark 32 Fuse.
    2. The failure of the 5" battery when using Mark 32 fusec ammunition to destroy dive bombers has been unfavorably commented on. The consensus of opinion seems to be that destruction where effected has been done by 40mm guns. If the Bureau of Ordnance has conducted any recent indicative tests along this line, information thereof would be welcomed.
