Complement: 107 Armament: 4 21” torpedo tubes; SUBROC Class: STURGEON The second SILVERSIDES (SSN-679) was laid down on 13 October 1969 by the General Dynamics Corp., Electric Boat Division, Groton, Conn.; launched on 4 June 1971; sponsored by Mrs. John H. Chafee, wife of the then Secretary of the Navy; and commissioned on 5 May 1972, Comdr. John E. Allen in command. Following shakedown in the Atlantic and Caribbean, SILVERSIDES continued to operate in the Atlantic, homeported at Charleston, S.C., into 1974. [Decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 2 August 1994, former SILVERSIDES is in storage at Bremerton, Washington awaiting her start in the Navy’s Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program. Her projected start date is 28 March 2001. When she emerges from the program, she will no longer exist as a complete ship and will be listed as scrapped.
