The contract for the construction of William M. Wood (DE-287)-a Rudderow-class destroyer escort slated to be built by the Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard of Hingham, Mass.-was cancelled on 12 March 1944, before her keel was laid.
With the cancellation of the contract for the construction of DE-287, the name William M. Wood was assigned to DE-557, a John C. Butler-class destroyer escort slated to be built by the Boston Navy Yard. However, before fabrication of the warship began, the contract for her construction was cancelled on 10 June 1944.
